M.Ed. · ELL Certified · 2020 Teacher of the Year
Lori Dunn-Reier has been teaching and tutoring English for over 30 years, in public school classrooms, community programs, and one-on-one sessions with students from every background imaginable. She began her career in Illinois before making her way to Florida, where she earned recognition as the 2020 Teacher of the Year at Baldwin Middle-Senior High School in Jacksonville's Duval County, a distinction that reflected both classroom excellence and deep student relationships.
Lori's teaching life has taken her across the world. She lived and taught in Zhengzhou, Henan, China, working with English language learners and gaining a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by adult ESL students and international learners. That experience profoundly shaped how she approaches non-native English speakers today, with patience rooted in real insight rather than assumption.
A lifelong learner herself, Lori holds a Master's degree in Education and an ELL (English Language Learners) certification. She has worked with struggling high schoolers, advanced academic students, adult professionals navigating careers in English, and immigrants building their lives in a new country. What she brings to every session is genuine patience, curiosity, and a knack for meeting people exactly where they are.
Now based in Apex, NC, Lori works with private students and small groups in the greater Triangle area and online. Whether your goal is a better grade, a higher SAT score, or the confidence to hold a conversation at work, she will get you there.
There is no shortage of tutors. Here is why families and adult learners across the Triangle keep choosing Lori.
Thirty years in the classroom and a Teacher of the Year award are not just credentials. They are evidence of what consistently good teaching looks like.
No two students get the same lesson plan. Sessions are built around your specific goals, gaps, and learning style from the first meeting forward.
In-person sessions across the Triangle, or Zoom sessions from anywhere in the country. Scheduling is built around your life, not a rigid calendar.
Most tutors handle ESL as an afterthought. Lori's ELL certification, years of adult ESL work, and time spent teaching in China mean non-native English speakers get instruction that actually fits how adults learn.
Lori is part of the Triangle community. She tutors here because she lives here, and her students' success matters to her far beyond the session hour.
"Lori is incredibly patient and makes learning English feel natural. After just a few weeks I felt so much more confident at work and in everyday conversations."
"My daughter's writing and reading scores improved dramatically over one semester. Lori has a gift for connecting with teenagers and knows exactly how to motivate them."
"We hired Lori to help our son prepare for the SAT. His score jumped over 100 points. More importantly, he finally understands how to approach reading comprehension, and that will serve him forever."
